I would definitely suggest a small tank (about 2 gallons)with a filter. It makes cleaning so much easier and provides a much healthier environment for the Betta. You can get kits at pet stores that include a tank, filter, gravel, and a plant. They aren't too expensive and totally worth it. Don't ever get a Betta in a vase with a living plant. These are very inadequate and do not provide the necessities for a Betta. (i.e. fresh water, protein rich food.) Betta food is specially formulated for Bettas so it's best to stick with that, not goldfish food. Dried blood-worms can supplement their diet once every few weeks. They do not require a lot of food. If the fish's belly is extended then you are feeding it too much. It can hurt the health of the fish. Research these fish properly before buying. Make sure you are fully informed before bringing one into your home.

Ah, LOL, the male ego bursts even at fish :D Tx DJ for explaining. I wonder how they'd act if you put one male and two females in the same tank... Or the other way around, two females and two males... Hm... I really really want one of those fish. Maybe my dwarf hamster would like to see it swimming too :D

You just can't put two MALE bettas together. They will do their best to kill each other. Females, well, they're not showy like males, but they don't trigger the fighting like another male.

Thought I would help with your wish, in a way...you don't need a tank for a fish like this :) It is a Betta, or Siamese fighting fish. They can survive perfectly happily in a bowl, with no filter or added oxygen, because of an organ in their head that allows them to 'breathe' air. They need only to be fed a tiny amount of food every couple of days, and to have the water in their bowl changed every now and then (how often you change the water depends on how big the bowl is.) Also, they are quite happy living by themselves...in fact, they really prefer it. Never put two Betta together, as they will fight to the death.
